Amazing Alpines

From above the tree line on mountains across the world, to the distant poles, we explore the diversity of alpine plant species, concentrating on the mega-diverse Alpine gardens of the Tibetan plateau. In this film, we discover some of the most incredible of all alpine flowers… from unique lilies, irises and orchids, to greenhouse plants (Saussurea and Rheum) which use their leaves in novel ways to trap sunlight and warmth and so grow over 4,000 m in some of the most extreme landscapes on the planet! We discover the reasons why many Alpine species are diminutive but also why some of the smallest Alpine plants produce some of the largest flowers in proportion to their foliage. Amongst yaks, temples and prayer flags, we discover the greatest Alpine floral treasures: Himalayan Meconopsis flowers with sapphire blue flowers.
